Hitachi to Invest $528m to Boost U.S. Manufacturing Capacity

AI Summary

Hitachi Energy, which is a company that makes power grid and electrification technologies, said on September 15, 2026, thatย it will build a $528 million transformer plant in Gallman, Mississippi.

It is well to be noted that Hitachi is investing $1.5 billion to increase its U.S. manufacturing capacity, and the Gallman transformer plant commitment constitutes a portion of that larger investment, which is reported to be theย biggest single investment in the country by Hitachi.

Apparently, the Gallman plant is expected to doubleย theย transformer production capacity of Hitachiย in Mississippi as operations shiftย away from its current plant in Crystal Springs, based on a company release.

It will mostly be used to boost output from power transformers built in Mississippi, with extra capacity intended to help meet skyrocketing electricity consumption across the nation.

The U.S. has been electrifying as advanced manufacturing ramps up in the industrial sector and AI data centers grow exponentially.

Construction is anticipated to begin later in 2026ย about 6.5 miles from the current Crystal Springs plant, but Hitachi said transformer production at the Gallman site has been scheduled for 2029. Hitachi said the Mississippi plant will generate over 700 permanent jobs after construction.

The planned location will be joining other significant Hitachi projects in the context of the company’s wider efforts to boost transformer manufacturing.

Other notable U.S. Hitachi activities consist of a $70 million expansion plan unveiled in 2025 with a focus on high-voltage grid equipment manufacturing at three separate regional Pennsylvania plants in Westmoreland County.

Hitachi, in order to push its U.S. manufacturing capacity, recently announced a $457 million South Boston, South Virginia, project to expand manufacturing of large power transformers, which is expected to be completed by 2028. And a $106 million transformer parts factory in West Tennessee near Alamo is expected to be ready by mid-2027.

According to president & CEO of Hitachi, Ltd., Toshiaki Tokunaga, “Since 2020, the Hitachi Group has invested and committed more than $14 billion in the United States, further strengthening our commitment as a trusted partner in supporting critical social infrastructure. This expanded investment will accelerate those efforts and contribute to powering America’s energy future.

Hitachi, Ltd.โ€™s subsidiary is driving a long-term dedication to American manufacturing that will enhance supply chain resiliency and the U.S. power grid in order to satisfy rapidly increasing energy demand.

Its parent company, based in Tokyo, said it would work to make possible strategic investment between the Japanese and U.S. governments in 2025. That includes the latest targets from the Trump administration and Mississippi governor announced on September 15, 2026,ย at theย annual G20 meeting in Houston so asย to bolster domestic access when it comes toย critical grid technologies.

Said Gov. Tate Reeves, “This is truly a massive win for Mississippi and the United States. Hitachi Energy could’ve made its largest investment in America anywhere in the countryโ€”but the company chose Mississippi.”

It is worth noting that the U.S. demand for power will grow at a rate of overย 3% a year by 2040, as reported by McKinsey & Company, the consulting firm.

Opines CEO of Hitachi Energy, Andreas Schierenbeck, โ€œThis investment in Mississippi, “Demand for electricity is growing rapidly, and the grid must grow with it. This investment in Mississippi, our largest ever in the U.S., reflects our long-term commitment to American manufacturing and building the grid infrastructure that will help power America’s growth for decades to come.โ€

In August, Switzerland-based Hitachi Energy announced plans to meet this fast-growing demand when it comes toย transformers around the world. The company will invest $300 million to boost its power transformer and component production capacity in Hefei, locatedย in theย Anhui province of East China, greatly expanding its global manufacturing territory.
