Thyssenkrupp in Talks to Reset Green Steel Plant Funding

AI Summary

Thyssenkrupp is in advanced discussions to reset green steel plant funding for Duisburg location in order to reflect an evolving economic climate, its finance chief stated, as mentioned on the Reuters portal on August 13, 2026.

It is worth noting that two-thirds of the €3 billion, or $3.5 billion, funding for the direct reduction plant from Thyssenkrupp comes from the German government and the group’s home state, centred initially on the utilization of hydrogen, an assumption that has since become pretty unrealistic.

Thyssenkrupp has engaged in long discussions with the EU and Germany to reset green steel plant funding structure to guarantee that the money still flows even if hydrogen is not going to be used initially.

According to Axl Hamann, he is extremely happy that the European Commission endorsed the planned amendment to the funding rules presently in effect and has already verified that they are completely compliant with EU state aid law, which implies that the Federal Government may enact this change quickly and consequently modify its funding choices as a result. Apparently, the new funding rules will be in effect from then.
