$330m In Transformer Insulation Plant in Canada by Hitachi

AI Summary

Hitachi Energy, which is a fully owned subsidiary of Hitachi, Ltd., is going to be investing $479 million CAD, which is apparently equivalent to over $330 million USD, in its North American insulation and components business with the development of a new, cutting-edge transformer Insulation plant in Canada located at London, Ontario. This investment will create a critical manufacturing capability that is currently unavailable in Canada, thereby boosting both domestic as well as North American supply when it comes to critical transformer insulation materials and apart from it also contributing to the growing electricity demand.

The Government of Canada went on to disclose a funding commitment of $20 million CAD with the help of the Strategic Response Fund –ย SRF so asย to support this effort. The Government of Ontario announced an investment of as much as $20 million CAD via the Invest Ontario Fund, and Natural Resources Canada offered a further $10 million CAD to Hitachi Energy Canada Inc.

This new transformer insulation plant in Canada is anticipated to create more than 100 permanent skilled jobs and is also expected to be completed by 2028. It will manufacture electrical insulation pressboard as well as laminates that apparently are critical to transformer production as well as operation. The facility will be home to the first pressboard manufacturing line of Canada and also Hitachi Energyโ€™s first in the Americas, thereby going ahead and moving production of a critical transformer insulation material nearer to the North American market.

New industrial projects, AI and data centers, growing communities as well as electrification are all placing an increasing need on the power system in Canada. So as to support that growth, there is no shred of doubt that oneย needsย new generation as well as transmission infrastructure, but at the same time, oneย also needsย the domestic industrial capacity along with robust supply chains to establish it. The fact is that transformers are a critical part of that infrastructure, but manufacturers are still dealing with global supply limitations, including the limited availability when it comes to specialized insulation materials which are needed to make transformers.

Says Helmut Bockshammer, the Global Product Group Manager for Insulation & Components, Business Unit Transformers at Hitachi Energy, โ€œAt Hitachi Energy, we are investing not only in manufacturing capacity but also in the infrastructure that underpins the future of energy. The new Transformer Insulation Factory will strengthen supply resilience, support our customers’ growth ambitions, and help address one of the most critical bottlenecks in transformer manufacturing. As electricity demand continues to rise, we are taking decisive action to ensure the industry has the materials and capabilities needed to build the grids of tomorrow.โ€

Transformer insulation materials go on to play an important role as far asย transformer efficiency along with dependability are concerned. Pressboard insulation is indeed critical for providing electrical insulation and contributing to the cooling of transformers, allowing for compact, safe, and economical transformer designs. The life and effectiveness of transformers are greatly influenced by the quality and uniformity of these materials.

Carla Vicente, the Managing Country Director at Hitachi Energy Canada, said that โ€œCanadaโ€™s National Electricity Strategy sets an ambition to double the capacity of the countryโ€™s electricity grid by 2050, and delivering that growth will require a stronger domestic supply chain. This investment supports that ambition by bringing new manufacturing capacity for a critical transformer component to Canada and helping build the infrastructure that will power Canadian communities, industries, and economic growth for generations to come.โ€

The new plant will further go ahead and reinforce theย global manufacturing footprint of Hitachi Energyย and supplement current insulation operations internationally, therebyย building a more resilient supply ecosystem for transformer manufacturers all around the world.

The Honourable Mรฉlanie Joly, the Minister of Industry and also the Minister responsible for Canada’s Economic Development for Quebec Regions, remarked that โ€œCanada is strengthening its electricity system to build a more connected, reliable, and efficient grid. By investing in the critical infrastructure needed to power our future, we are supporting economic growth, creating good-paying jobs, and strengthening Canadaโ€™s economic security. Our governmentโ€™s investment in Hitachi is delivering real results through the National Electricity Strategy and is securing Canadaโ€™s energy future.โ€

According to Tim Hodgson, the Minister of Energy and Natural Resources, โ€œThis project demonstrates how we can create high-value uses for Canadian forest products like pulp in the energy infrastructure that powers our economy. By supporting advanced manufacturing, strengthening Canada’s electricity supply chains and opening new markets for forest products, this project will help build a stronger and more resilient Canadian economy while advancing the vision set out in the Forest Sector Strategy for Canada and the National Electricity Strategy.โ€

Opines Vic Fedeli, Ontario Minister of Economic Development, Job Creation, and Trade โ€œIn the face of global economic uncertainty, our government continues to foster the competitive conditions needed for global companies to confidently expand their presence in Ontario and invest in long-term projects. We are proud to stand as a partner to Hitachi Energyโ€™s latest investment, which will create new, high-value jobs for local workers and further position Ontario as a central hub for advanced manufacturing projects powering the economy and future.โ€

It is well to be noted that the London site is part of a commitment which has been made by Hitachi Energy so as to go ahead andย invest more than $2 billion USD in order to strengthen the North American supply chain through 2027. Recent Canadian investments include the purchase of Canduct, which isย a London-based manufacturer of transformer insulation kits as well as components, and a $270-million Canadian expansion that will almost triple the manufacturing capacity of large power transformers in Varennes, Quebec.
