U.S. Steel on October 30, 2026, broke ground on an innovative direct reduced iron – DRI production facility in Arkansas at its Big River Steel Works located at Osceola.

U.S. Steel is investing $1.9 billion to boost its advanced capabilities by way of connecting iron ore manufacturing in Minnesota to electric arc furnace – EAF driven steelmaking in Arkansas.

Mine-to-mill connection promotes future generations of steelmaking and a strong US supply chain. The investment is expected to create around 200 full-time jobs and roughly 2,000 construction jobs at its peak. Site preparation is underway and construction is scheduled to start in the second part of 2026.

Says U.S. Steel President and CEO David Burritt, “This investment showcases what U.S. Steel does best. From mining iron ore in Minnesota to producing advanced steel in Arkansas, our people are turning vision into reality. They’re creating good-paying jobs today while building the capabilities that will make U. S. Steel stronger and more competitive for decades to come.”

State leaders hailed the funding as an encouragement for Arkansas workers and the state’s expanding role when it comes to American steelmaking. According to Sarah Huckabee Sanders, Arkansas Governor, “America’s next great building boom needs steel, and we want Arkansas workers making it. With this $1.9 billion investment, U.S. Steel is helping put that ambition into motion, strengthening our nation’s supply chain, and putting more Arkansans to work. From the construction site to the mill floor, this project means more opportunities to earn a decent living and build a life right here in Mississippi County.”

Direct reduced iron is a high-quality ore-centered feedstock for EAFs produced by eliminating oxygen from iron ore without melting the ore. The new facility will be situated near Big River 2 to feed DRI hot directly to its EAFs, which will promote low-emission steelmaking for the automotive and appliance industries as well as solar industries.

Interestingly, the DRI is an excellent alternative to prime scrap, improving price competitiveness as well as supply assurance. Big River Steel Works’ new DRI can also be fabricated and molded into hot briquetted iron that is easily transported to be utilized at Big River Steel Works or any other locations.

Opines the Executive Vice President – Advanced Technology Steelmaking and Chief Operating Officer, Big River Steel Works, Daniel Brown, “From a rock in the ground to a coil from our mill, this facility creates a true mine-to-mill connection within U.S. Steel. It gives us greater control over a critical raw material, strengthens supply reliability, and provides more flexibility to produce the advanced steels our customers need.”

The DRI production facility in Arkansas is the newest addition to the Big River Steel Works campus, which includes Big River Steel as well as Big River 2. U. S. Steel bought Big River Steel, which is a next-generation steel producer, in 2021. Expansion of Big River 2 for $3 billion had been made, and it started producing steel in 2024. The campus accommodates four EAFs and is capable of manufacturing over 6 million tonnes of steel annually.

In addition to this, beyond the plant, U.S. Steel has an extensive effect in Arkansas. An FY2024 economic impact study showed the company provided employment for over 4,700 jobs and generated $45 million when it comes to state and local tax revenue. Its overall donations to community organizations amounted to over $2.6 million.

The post Construction of DRI Production Facility in Arkansas first appeared on Manufacturing Informs.

Oman has entered into 28 investment agreements in various sectors with over RO304 million or about $790 million, for projects in the country’s industrial cities and special economic zones as well as free zones. The deals cover in excess of two million square meters of space for logistics, manufacturing, food processing, and recycling, as well as commercial use.

It is worth noting that of the announced 28 investment agreements, RO147.6 million goes to the industrial cities that are run by the Public Establishment for Industrial Estates – Madayn. This involves a proposed RO112 million iron and steel products plant by Atlas Steel at Sohar Industrial City that will spread across nearly 440,000 square meters.

Fujian Mancheng Industries and Investment is to invest RO20 million to set up a ceramics facility in Sohar on a plot of over 241,000 square meters. Other projects in Madayn’s industrial cities consist of a RO7 million fertilizer plant in Raysut, paper product production, structural metal product manufacturing, and oilfield equipment manufacturing and upkeep facilities.

The Sohar Free Zone is represented by five agreements valued at RO58.5 million. These happen to include an RO38 million vehicle assembly complex with a built-up area of 317,000 square meters and also an RO15 million transformer manufacturing plant by Voltamp High Voltage Transformers.

Apparently, Lalan Middle East is also planning to invest RO1.5 million in expansion when it comes to medical equipment manufacturing plants.

There are 6 agreements worth RO55.08mn have been signed for projects in the Duqm Special Economic Zone. They include a RO40 million shrimp-feed manufacturing facility by Al Jazer Feed, projects pertaining to livestock quarantine, fish and seafood processing, and used-oil recycling, as well as property development.

Notably, all these three agreements represent RO32.95 million at the Salalah Free Zone. They consist of a steel structures plant at RO19.25 million, RO7.7 million when it comes to gypsum products, and RO6 million as far as a dairy processing project is concerned.

Over RO10.4m has been allocated to projects at Khazaen Economic City involving manufacturing and logistics facilities. The signing event also commemorated the establishment of Khazaen’s free zone with its initial two investment agreements.

The agreements were made public by the Public Authority for Special Economic Zones and Free Zones – OPAZ of Oman. The authority said the projects were a component of its attempts to draw in capital and foster industrial and commercial operations within the country.

The post Oman Enters Into 28 Investment Agreements in Varied Sectors first appeared on Manufacturing Informs.

The investments by South Korean, Taiwanese, and Japanese firms in the US are likely to pick up gradually as the world’s supply chain reconfigures, a senior Citi executive told Reuters.

Ernesto Torres Cantu, head of international business for Citi outside North America, said companies the idea of these Asian economies to make investments in the US itself means the pattern of greater inflows of capital is likely to continue.

The inbound business into North America is seeing double-digit growth, and this is reflecting a growing amount of investment activity by multinational businesses that want to grow their presence in the US, Cantu told Reuters in Hong Kong.

It is well to be noted that Citi and JPMorgan are two of the banks financing the Japanese projects involving Tokyo’s $550bn investment pledge to the US. Meanwhile, South Korea’s $350 billion strategic investing package saw its first tranche announced by the White House recently.

Typically, as companies traverse different phases of growth, from buying land and building factories to establishing manufacturing facilities and managing routine tasks, capital invested in US-bound projects goes up, Cantu said. He added that this gradual process will keep investment flows going for a long time.

Cantu said that large multinationals have proven to be resilient to geopolitical delays and are adjusting swiftly to altering business conditions.

Tariffs are still a big factor, but Cantu stated that the Gulf War may be a bigger factor in business choices, forcing companies to review conventional trade routes and retool supply chains.

As Asian economies to make investments in the US, such sort of developments are making banking services like payments and trade finance, as well as transaction settlements, more essential as businesses deal with evolving global trade environments.

Revenues when it comes to Citi’s services business, which serves corporations, financial institutions, and governing bodies with cash management, payments, trade finance, and cash flow services, surged 15% in the third quarter of 2026.

The figure was compared to an 8% rise in the total revenue of the bank and demonstrated the viability of its transaction banking business.

Cantu also sees cross-border business flows with Asian economies continuing to increase, with China and India becoming key activity centers.

Trade between Britain and India has increased enormously as a consequence of the lowering of tariffs. He is also of the opinion that the free trade deal between the European Union and India, which is set to take effect in 2027, will provide huge business opportunities.

Meanwhile, the momentum of business growth from China to overseas markets is projected to continue. Cross-border trade flows from China to the majority of the world have risen by over 20% a year in the past two years.

Citi will take advantage of its large corporate banking client base in China to further develop its footprint in the domestic securities market, assisting local and global companies.

The bank just got the go-ahead to set up a wholly owned securities unit in the country. This would enable Citi to tap into a larger portion of the onshore securities business in China by leveraging its current relationships with corporate clients, said Cantu.

The post Asian Companies to Make Investments in The US Continually first appeared on Manufacturing Informs.

The U.S. Department of Energy – DOE has unveiled a new national consortium to accelerate domestic battery manufacturing. The effort could help solve a significant challenge for the U.S. drone industry, namely developing a dependable and highly competitive domestic battery supply chain.

On Oct. 28, 2026, the Battery Manufacturing Accelerator – BattMan was announced, which is a combination of four national laboratories and five universities. The effort will be led by the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory and will look for industry collaborators.

The consortium will employ AI and advanced sensors as well as automated manufacturing systems to minimize manufacturing costs and enhance battery quality. Its work will underpin batteries for drones, transportation, and energy storage, along with defence.

Advancements in Battery Manufacturing and Waste Reduction

A priority of the initiative is to minimize waste in the manufacturing of battery electrodes.

Oak Ridge National Laboratory says that making the electrodes can produce scrap rates as high as 40%. Researchers want to lower that to under 5% by means of enhanced surveillance and automated process control.

The technology would enable manufacturing equipment to sense problems and make immediate adjustments in production operations. This could minimize waste, make products more consistent, and lower the cost of making battery cells.

Some of the research will take place at the Battery Manufacturing Facility of Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Tennessee.

The consortium will look at domestic battery manufacturing processes for both traditional lithium-ion batteries as well as next-generation battery technologies. Its objective is to help advance new technologies right from laboratory development to commercial production.

Creating a Domestic Drone Battery Supply Chain

The statement comes as the U.S. government and private sector work to reduce reliance when it comes to imported drone components.

It is well to be noted that the battery cells are still a big problem. U.S. companies are developing advanced battery technologies, but there is insufficient domestic production capacity. Producers also have to be competitive on quality, price, and scale compared with well-known overseas suppliers.

Interestingly, the federal government and private investors have recently invested in expanding U.S. battery production.

In September 2026, DRONELIFE reported that Amprius Technologies had received around $75 million in funding to help build domestic drone battery production. The planned production line would have capacity for a maximum of 12 million battery cells a year.

Badland Batteries opened a manufacturing plant in Fargo, North Dakota, in October 2026 to make battery cells for defence systems and drones.

BattMan tackles a similar challenge – enhancing the manufacturing processes necessary to make domestic battery production high-quality and commercially viable.

The consortium did not say when commercial production might start, or name any specific drone makers as partners. But its research could help efforts to boost U.S. battery-making capacity and reduce dependence on foreign suppliers.

The post US DOE Takes Step to Speed Up Domestic Battery Manufacturing first appeared on Manufacturing Informs.

In a recent move that has caught the eyes of many, the U.S. government will allocate $237 million to domestic companies to manufacture electric grid components as the country launches its first Grid Supply Chain Program against a backdrop of soaring demands for computational power.

Energy Secretary Chris Wright announced on October 30, 2026, a Department of Energy program to bolster the durability when it comes to the national power grid and encourage domestic manufacturing of vital components.

Wright said, “DOE is investing in American-made technologies and modernizing our grid to reduce reliance on foreign suppliers and deliver affordable, reliable electricity.”

It is well to be noted that DOE’s Grid Supply Chain Program is seeking project proposals for the first round of funding. The program can provide a maximum of $375 million in federal grants to support manufacturing of electrical distribution as well as power transformers, electric grid components, and critical materials.

The first funding possibility is $237 million in federal grants to build a Grid Supply Chain Alternatives to Lead Energy Dominance – Grid SCALED. Concept papers are due November 20, 2026, and full applications are due February 8, 2027.

Eligible applicants must be domestic entities legally organized in the U.S. and have a physical address where business is conducted in the U.S.

One may apply as either a primary or subrecipient entity: –

Private companies

Universities

Non-profit organizations

State and local governmental entities and

Tribes – Indian

As per the DOE, federal investments in projects are intended to spur grid supply chain projects that repair and reuse transformers and various other grid components. The idea is to add to existing inventory faster and cheaper instead of making new ones. The projects will receive as much as $50 million in funding.

The second objective will allocate almost $187 million to accelerate the identification and use of alternative materials as well as subcomponents from U.S. sources by manufacturers of American grid equipment. The final outcome will be to reduce reliance on foreign products.

Katie Jereza, assistant secretary of the Office of Electricity, said, “America should never have to rely on foreign suppliers to keep the lights on. We’re putting American ingenuity to work, developing next-generation grid technologies that strengthen our domestic supply chain, help lower costs, and make our grid more reliable. The power to secure our energy future should be in our own hands.”

DOE is projected to provide additional grants in 2027 to build the supply chain for next-generation technologies like solid-state transformers.

U.S. Power Grid

It is worth noting that the national grid comprises three main areas and linked local grids that channel the electricity circulation from power generators to load centers.

The Eastern Interconnection – for states that are located in the east of the Rocky Mountains

The Western Interconnection – States right from the West Coast to the Rocky Mountains

The Texas Interconnected system

Data Centers Expected to Stress Grid

The North American Electric Reliability Corporation has been watching growing demand for electricity connected to what it defines as computational loads, which is the electricity used by information technology equipment. NERC is a nonprofit international regulatory authority dedicated to reducing hazards to guarantee a dependable and safe bulk-power system. Computational loads consist of data centers and crypto mining infrastructure.

In September 2026, it issued a “Reliability Insights” evaluation called Large Computational Load Risks From Voltage Sensitivity.

The report said the North American bulk-power system is at a landmark point marked by a sudden shift in both the quantity and nature of electricity consumption, driven by the electricity needs of computational loads.

NERC said that computational loads underpin AI, cloud computing, and associated IT requirements that are essential to the technology leadership, economic expansion, and people’s daily lives in North America. However, interconnection of large loads is a reliability concern for the BPS, as these loads are looking to interconnect very rapidly – sometimes in just one to two years, which poses a danger that demand will rise more quickly compared to available energy.

Apparently, NERC is working with interested parties in the computational load business so as to find solutions that are good for all.

The post US Allocating $237m to Manufacture Electric Grid Components first appeared on Manufacturing Informs.

Merck, a major science and technology company, recently inaugurated its new Asia-Pacific Bioprocessing Production Center in South Korea at Daejeon. The center is the largest life science investment by the company in the Asia-Pacific to date, representing a total investment in excess of €300 million.

It is well to be noted that the 44,500 square-meter site will expand Merck’s regional manufacturing capabilities when it comes to critical materials and solutions for the development as well as manufacturing of biologic medicines.

The fact is that it offers biopharmaceutical manufacturers in Asia-Pacific greater accessibility to the materials and solutions necessary to create and manufacture biologic medicines. Dependable access to critical materials matters at each stage of the biologics manufacturing process, said Jean-Charles Wirth, member of the Executive Board of Merck and CEO of Life Science. He adds that “Daejeon brings advanced production closer to biopharma manufacturers across Asia-Pacific, giving them greater supply confidence as they move from development to commercial scale. ” The center adds the regional capacity customers need and delivers the quality and consistency they expect from Merck.”

Merck will provide bioprocessing products that are used from early stages of process development via manufacturing at a commercial scale in Daejeon. This includes cell culture media in both dry powder and liquid formats, such as pre-GMP small-scale custom products through imMEDIAte ADVANTAGE®, process liquids, and ready-to-use cleaning-in-place solutions, as well as one-time sterile sampling solutions utilizing the NovaSeptum® Sterile Sampling System.

In tandem, they assist customers in speeding up advancement, increasing production, upholding controlled manufacturing environments, and minimizing contamination risk. Cell culture media and process liquids will be manufactured to uniform global standards of quality and made using animal-component-free raw materials.

Heo Tae-Jeong, the mayor of Daejeon, opined, “The completion of Merck’s Asia-Pacific Bioprocessing Production Center, a world-leading bioscience company, marks a historic turning point in Daejeon’s rise as a global bio hub—not just for Korea, but for the world. We will provide our full support to ensure that Merck’s foundational technologies at the Daedeok Innopolis and the capabilities of the local community can be brought together seamlessly. We will focus the city’s resources on building a world-class global bio ecosystem through close collaboration among industry, academia, research institutions, and hospitals.”

The integrated digital ecosystem of the center is designed to facilitate automated data collection and complete batch tracking, enhancing process openness, and facilitating quality management as well as regulatory compliance.

The facility is intended to reduce fossil fuel consumption on site and increase energy and water efficiency by means of the utilization of solar power, a heat-pump system, recovery of energy in air handling units, and reuse of rainwater.

The Bioprocessing Production Center in South Korea at Daejeon is an important element of the in-region-for-region strategy from Merck. This builds upon recent investments made throughout the global network of the company, which include BioReliance® drug product testing in Germany’s Darmstadt and filtration manufacturing in Blarney, Ireland. This network is used by Merck to connect key products and services more close to consumers and to adhere to uniform international quality benchmarks.

The post Bioprocessing Production Center in South Korea by Merck first appeared on Manufacturing Informs.

Biosphere has won a US$21mn deal from the US Department of War to develop industrial biomanufacturing systems for local production of critical chemicals and materials. The contract builds on its takeover of NovoNutrients, the gas fermentation specialist, and an earlier Army nutrition project.

The award to create industrial biomanufacturing systems through the Defence Industrial Base Consortium was announced on October 28, 2026. It will assist with engineering and economic evaluations, integrated manufacturing trials, and development, installation, and operation of a 20,000-litre industrial bioreactor to enable larger deployments.

The company, which is based in Oakland, California, is developing reactor technology to reduce the capital cost of building biomanufacturing facilities and the operating expenses associated with manufacturing biologically derived materials. The latest agreement will also promote alternative reactor designs to boost production efficiency with less complex, less costly equipment and infrastructure.

Says the CEO and co-founder of Biosphere, Brian Heligman, “America’s ability to compete with China depends in part on our ability to manufacture the materials that underpin our economy and national defence. Biomanufacturing offers an entirely new approach to this challenge. Instead of relying on complex global supply chains and highly specialized production facilities, we can use biology to manufacture a broad range of critical chemicals from domestically available feedstocks. We aim to make that capability economically competitive at an industrial scale.”

Biosphere’s platform features the latest bioreactor designs, process intensification and patented control and automation systems. The company claims its method replaces traditional steam sterilization with UV sterilization, simplifying manufacturing infrastructure and giving professionals more flexibility in terms of reactor design.

In July 2026, the company bolstered these capabilities with the purchase of NovoNutrients, adding proprietary loop reactor technology and microbial strains as well as gas fermentation skills to its portfolio of products. Terms of finance were not disclosed.

NovoNutrients, formed in 2017 and located in California’s Sunnyvale, developed technology that transforms industrial carbon dioxide and hydrogen into single-cell protein so as to have food and feed. Its reactor work was aimed at facilitating the flow of gaseous feedstocks to biological systems at a commercial level.

Biosphere says that the loop reactor design enhances gas-liquid mass transfer and fluid circulation while lowering energy consumption and upkeep requirements compared to traditional mechanically agitated bioreactors. The technology was verified in laboratory and pilot scale systems and utilised to guide commercial scale design as well as modelling.

At the time of the acquisition, Biosphere stated that the technology would complement its UV sterilization platform to facilitate intensified bioreactor designs for both gas as well as carbohydrate feedstocks. Heligman also cited the existing FEL3 loop reactor pilot plant design of NovoNutrients as a base for additional development under the defence contracts of the company.

The most recent program concerns industrial production capacity, in which Biosphere contends that generalized biomanufacturing infrastructure can be utilized to produce more varied chemicals and materials compared with facilities built around a single product or narrowly defined chemical procedures.

Establishing a strong industrial base is more than just bringing standard manufacturing processes again to the U.S., Heligman said. He added, “It’s about developing fundamentally better ways to manufacture. If we can dramatically reduce the cost and time required to establish new production capacity, we can change the economics of domestic manufacturing and open up entirely new categories of products that are practical to make in America.”

The award corresponds to an Army announcement in May 2026 of a deal with an overall potential value of a maximum of US$9 million throughout 42 months. That project is an alternative application of the biosphere infrastructure, generating protein-rich food in remote and contested settings.

The award, via the US Army Combat Capabilities Development Command Soldier Centre, consists of a baseline task and three choices to create, construct, and demonstrate a field deployable biomanufacturing platform.

The system suggested converting gaseous inputs, minerals and water into protein-rich microbial biomass for shakes and bars, as well as ration ingredients using gas fermentation. The first-generation design is meant for 2,800 calories per person per day for a maximum of 18 personnel. Modelling is planned for larger systems for around 250.

In a previous interview with Protein Production Technology International, Heligman cited routine upkeep, water and media management, energy use, and downstream processing as issues to address for fermenters to be deployed outside of traditional facilities.

One of the most complicated parts of a fermentation is sterile operation. Heligman said that “if we can reduce dependence on traditional steam-in-place infrastructure, we can make reactors simpler, more automated, and more realistic to deploy outside conventional facilities.”

The newly financed 20,000-litre facility was the first plant of industrial scale by Biosphere. The announcement didn’t specify the chemicals to be manufactured or give a schedule for initial production.

The post Biosphere Gets $21m Industrial Biomanufacturing Systems Deal first appeared on Manufacturing Informs.

Let us be honest – The United States invented the personal computer and still leads the world when it comes to designing advanced technology. But decades of outsourcing have left the country reliant on foreign manufacturers for the computers as well as components that run everything, ranging from personal devices to critical government facilities. This sort of a dependency presents a national security risk. Disruptions to global supply chains or disputes could limit the supply of vital computing hardware and weaken the ability of America to keep up production when it matters the most.

Anduril and Qualcomm Technologies, Inc., on October 27, 2026, announced the launch of BlueChip, which, apparently, is a new product line that aims to re-establish American computer manufacturing. BlueChip will develop American-made computing hardware for the most critical industries in America, including government, defence, first responders, as well as public safety, starting with a laptop built and assembled in the US, and reassemble the suppliers, manufacturing processes as well as knowledge needed to manufacture these systems at scale.

Interestingly, BlueChip combines Qualcomm Technologies’ strength when it comes to high-performance, power-efficient computation with Anduril’s efforts to re-establish American computer manufacturing. Qualcomm Technologies, based in San Diego, will provide their Snapdragon X Series, offering the core computing power to the laptop for general-purpose processing, graphics, and on-device AI.

Anduril already created working prototypes of the first BlueChip laptop and plans to start taking orders in 2027. The engineering work includes developing the enclosure for U.S. machining, setting up the battery and power management systems to fit standard U.S. battery technology, and choosing metals that can be made and machined at scale by U.S. industry. Anduril is also working on a bonding process for incorporating display glass made in the U.S. These are just a handful of instances of engineering work that goes into designing computers for the realities when it comes to the American supply chain.

Developing Computers in the United States

Over 90% of the component procurement cost for the BlueChip prototypes comes from suppliers in the US and allied countries. Anduril is making efforts to ramp up domestic component manufacturing before its projected 2027 availability, with a long-term objective of establishing a completely domestic supply chain.

BlueChip laptops will be built in the U.S., and the circuit board assembly process will be conducted at the Arsenal-1 facility in Ohio by Anduril.

Anduril is building out domestic production of enclosures, battery components, and additional hardware while working to approve suppliers and prepare for manufacturing.

The US has already spent billions of dollars to boost domestic chip production, but building entire computers also needs displays, batteries, circuit boards, and various other components that are still mainly manufactured abroad. Re-establishing domestic computer manufacturing will require reconstruction of that larger industrial base.

BlueChip will proceed in phases, first by increasing local sourcing and manufacturing, then by having zero dependence on foreign suppliers, and finally by having a supply chain that is 100% American. The designs, supplier relationships, and manufacturing processes established for the first laptop will be leveraged to assist with other BlueChip products, increasing America’s ability to produce the computing hardware its sectors need.

The post BlueChip to Re-Establish American Computer Manufacturing first appeared on Manufacturing Informs.

Ricoh Company, Ltd. announced on October 27, 2026, that it is going to build the manufacturing for inkjet-printed perovskite solar cells as the company progresses toward achieving mass production.

The company is going to be building a production site located in Miyagi Prefecture, Japan, at Ricoh Industry Co., Ltd.’s Tohoku Site, and plans to ramp up to a yearly production capacity of several hundred megawatts – MW by 2030 and to gigawatt – GW scale manufacturing in the years ahead.

It is worth noting that the perovskite solar cell manufacturing project from Ricoh has been chosen to receive support under the GX – Green Transformation Supply Chain Development Support Program, which is supervised by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry – METI from Japan.

Ricoh is applying its inkjet technology that can deposit the correct amount of material precisely where it is needed to create all functional coatings of perovskite solar cells. This allows for efficient use of material and simplifies manufacturing processes with an objective to improve efficiency and reduce manufacturing costs.

Ricoh is moving to commercialize functional printing, which refers to applying inkjet technologies created via its commercial and industrial printing businesses to manufacturing procedures like the coating and deposition of functional materials. This is as part of its medium- to long-term expansion strategy. One of the projects in this campaign is inkjet-printed perovskite solar cells. After the selection, Ricoh plans to carry out research, development, and exhibition activities aimed at mass manufacturing and commercialization, with the goal of increasing the practical implementation of perovskite solar cells and developing new business prospects.

Background

Perovskite solar cells have attracted attention recently because their thin, light, and flexible features are considered to be effective as the transition to a decarbonized society speeds up and the share of renewable energy continues to grow. These features facilitate setup on rooftops and walls of restricted load-bearing buildings, where traditional silicon solar cells are challenging to install, thus increasing possibilities for power generation.

But to be widely adopted, in addition to power generation performance and durability improvement, stable-quality mass production technologies and reduction of production cost are still issues to be resolved.

Setting up of production capacities

Ricoh will set up a production site at the Tohoku Site of Ricoh Industry in Miyagi Prefecture, Japan, so as to have mass production of inkjet-printed perovskite solar cells. The site will use a manufacturing process based on Ricoh’s exclusive inkjet technology. Ricoh plans to boost annual production capacity to several hundred MW by 2030, keeping in mind the future expansion to GW-scale production.

Benefits of perovskite solar cell technology from Ricoh

(i) Inkjet technology for pattern printing of all functional layers

Ricoh makes use of its renowned inkjet printhead technology and ink supply technology as well as printing system technology when it comes to the manufacturing of perovskite solar cells.

Inkjet technology allows for accurate control over microscopic droplets, enabling the correct quantity of material to be placed precisely where it is needed. Ricoh is utilizing this technology to pattern-print all the functional layers as far as perovskite solar cells are concerned, thus improving material utilization and simplifying the manufacturing processes in order to realize high productivity along with low-cost production.

(ii) Organic photoconductor technology for multi-function printers

Ricoh has been researching and developing organic solar cells using organic photoconductor technologies innovated in the creation of multifunctional printers.

Technologies generated from these initiatives are now being deployed for perovskite solar cells.

Ricoh aims to improve the efficiency of perovskite solar cells and develop mass-production technologies by making use of its long-held inkjet and organic photoconductor technologies.

Progress so far and future outlook

In September 2025, the development and demonstration project from Ricoh for inkjet-printed perovskite solar cell technology was chosen for assistance under the Green Innovation Fund, which is administered by the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization – NEDO in Japan.

Ricoh’s efforts were selected under the GX Supply Chain Development Support Program of Japan. Based on the outcomes of its research, development, and demonstration activities, Ricoh will work to promote advancement toward mass production and commercialization, aimed at broadening the practical implementation of perovskite solar cells. Ricoh will also make a contribution to enhancing the industrial competitiveness of Japan in the GX domain.

The company will also accelerate the commercialization of functional printing by way of using inkjet technology and develop new growth areas.

The post Manufacturing of Inkjet-Printed Perovskite Solar Cells first appeared on Manufacturing Informs.

Audi plans to build its first US factory in Georgia with $4bn investment for 200,000 SUVs a year. The appearance of CEO Gernot Döllner with Donald Trump at a campaign rally has now raised eyebrows. The new factory is a significant change in the OEM’s global manufacturing strategy.

It is well to be noted that in a politically charged setting, CEO Gernot Döllner announced one of the biggest manufacturing investments that Audi has ever made. US President Donald Trump unveiled plans for the first American production plant by Audi at a campaign rally in Perry, Georgia, prior to inviting Döllner to the podium.

Audi boss appreciated Trump for his support. The fact is that this entire appearance prompts questions about the political neutrality of the OEM, especially since Audi’s own guidelines limit public appearances with election candidates during the three months leading up to elections.

Yet the announcement of US factory in Georgia with $4bn investment represents a watershed moment for the German high-end manufacturer.

Production at the Georgia facility is expected to begin in the early 2030s, with the plant manufacturing Audi’s Q7, Q8 and Q9 SUV models. The company expects the site to have an annual production capacity of up to 200,000 vehicles, with approximately half of the output intended for export markets outside the United States. The investment is aimed at strengthening Audi’s position in the American premium vehicle segment, where the company sees further growth potential.

The decision also comes amid rising trade costs and pressure on Audi’s sales performance in the United States. The automaker currently imports all vehicles sold in the American market from Europe or Mexico. According to Audi CEO Gernot Döllner, tariffs cost the company approximately €1.2 billion ($1.4 billion) last year. Establishing local manufacturing capacity is expected to help the company reduce its exposure to import tariffs and other trade-related risks while improving its ability to serve customers in the region.

Audi said the investment decision followed an extensive site selection process that evaluated more than 70 locations over several months. The company also held negotiations with public officials before selecting Georgia for the proposed facility. Döllner described the project as part of Audi’s long-term growth strategy in the United States, noting that the country represents the world’s second-largest premium vehicle market.

The planned factory also comes as Volkswagen Group undertakes a major restructuring of its operations, including plans to cut 50,000 jobs and close four German plants between 2031 and 2034. Döllner has maintained that the US investment will not reduce Germany’s importance to Audi, stating that vehicle development and technology creation will continue to be centred there. The Georgia facility is intended to complement the company’s existing operations rather than replace its German manufacturing and engineering base.

With the planned investment, Audi will become the latest major German luxury automaker to establish vehicle production in the United States, following Mercedes-Benz and BMW. The company is positioning the new facility as a strategic step towards expanding its American business, increasing local production and building a stronger presence in the premium SUV market.

The post Audi Plans US Factory in Georgia with $4bn Investment first appeared on Manufacturing Informs.
